Hi everyone, I am in school for computer science programming. I intend to go into artificial intelligence and brain wave programming application. I first turned on a computer on Dec. 1st, 2010 and have been hooked ever since. I am not happy with Microsoft's pay-for-everything mentality. If I can help it, I would eventually like to work with Linux to unseat Microsoft's control of the O.S. market. where there is a will, there is a way. Anyway, I downloaded Ultimate 2.9 64 bit and could not get the sound to work so I deleted it and downloaded Ultimate 3.0 (what an amazing system), but again, I have no sound and it is killing me. I suspect it may have to do with my on board sound card ( I have an MSI X58 with 7.1 hd sound). I run it through an HDMI adapter on a DVI out into a sharp AQUOS 46" led tv. I also get no sound through my headphones or computer speakers. Should I get a pci sound card? I have tried all that I know, but Linux is not so friendly with being simple. The mixer shows that there is sound as the bars are moving. What the heck, what is the issue. If Linux wants to catch up to Windows then they have to do better than this. Why have such an awesome O.S. like Ultimate and have such a stupid glitch. It makes no sense what so ever. And when will their help site be back on line??

open xterm or uxterm (under accessories) type 'alsamixer' (without the ' ') hit enter and see if the volumn control is muted' or all of the way down.
