Desura, a digital distribution service for gamers, puts downloadable games, mods and downloadable content into gamers' hands directly from the developers. Think of it like xbox live for your PC. After a 2 month beta period, Desura has released their Linux version of their software. This article explains how to install it.

First, download the latest (Desura downloadhttp://www.desura.com/desura-i686.tar.gz) version of Desura and unpack it:

Code:
[rob@station-222 Downloads]$ tar zxvf desura-i686.tar.gz
desura/
desura/README
desura/desura

Their README states:
Installation:
Extract the 'desura' binary to any location where your user has write
permissions, and run. It will download the rest of the components required
and install itself into a folder called 'desura', unless it's already in one.

So - cd into the desura directory and run the desura script:
Code:
[rob@station-222 Downloads]$ cd desura
[rob@station-222 desura]$ ./desura &

This will open up a nice looking download/install box.

If you're into first person shooters (like quake, doom, etc...) try out Xonotic! It's a free one on there..

Nice tutorial. Hopefully the addition of Desura will bring more games to Linux, even some commercial ones. And if anyone wants to add me on Desura, feel free to. The name is the same as my forum name. Maybe we can play sometime if anyone wants to or I can definitely recommend you some really good games.

Wish I had time for some games. When and if I do I will be coming back here to find you for that activity. thank you for the invitation.

YES! I have to go to work, but I just did a quick test.
Installs fine on Ubuntu 11.10, 64-bit.
Installing games works (those I've tested)

Possible bugs:

The Sales and New Releases window that pops up, doesn't change.
For example, it tells you so-and-so game has been released. If you click
next to see the text game, the window changes but the picture doesn't change.

Another tiny issue is that the download progress window is too small sometimes.
You can see the progress bar, but some text is cut off.

If any of those are unknown bugs, I'll get some screenshots together, as well as
poke around and see what errors I can find. But now, off to work!

Good job on the tutorial Rob! Desura is a gaming client for Linux, like Steam(Valve) for Windows and most of all it's Open Source. I'm sure it has some of the most popular games that are available even on steam.

I was scrolling through their webpage and was surprised to find a couple of interesting games like Penumbra and Savage. The list is still small, but i'm sure with the community working to develop more games it should grow bigger.

Desura is steam like client for Linux to play all kinds of games. (Some games are not free).Go to www.desura.com and download desura-i686.tar.gz from their download button to your home/yourusername folder if possible.Open a terminal console like Konsole, LXTerminal or Gnome Terminal etc. This can be found in the PCLinuxOS Menus under More Applications -> Terminals Any terminal will do.

I got an error.
/opt/desurium/lib/desura: error while loading shared libraries: libboost_filesystem.so.1.53.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

What to do?

Try installing the needed library by typing in a terminal, with Root privileges -

Code:
apt-get install libboost-filsystem1.55.0
or
Code:
apt-get install libboost-filsystem1.54.0
or
Code:
apt-get install libboost-filsystem1.53.0

Alternately, do a search in "Synaptic", the "Ubuntu Software Center", or your preferred graphical package manager for "libboost-filesystem".
