Novell came up aces in its third-quarter report yesterday. The operating loss was smaller than last year, despite tepid sales growth of 3%, and $20 million in free cash flow is nothing to sneeze at.

The cost of supporting Netware, Novell's old flagship OS, is keeping the company from wholeheartedly joining the exploding Linux market.

A RealNetworks vice president voiced a few inflammatory opinions during LinuxWorld Boston last Tuesday. The RealNetworks rep in question, Jeff Ayars, said that Linux as a consumer platform would be dead unless DRM capabilities are built into the OS itself.

So will this software delivery method revolutionize the industry like Michael Robertson thinks it will? Maybe, but chances are that it will take a long time.
