Red Hat Unveils Enterprise Linux 5.4, Sep 08, 2009

Red Hat, a provider of open source solutions, announced the availability of the fourth update to its Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 platform, providing the delivery of technology enhancements to customers via the company's subscription model.

Novell today announced that three of its sponsored open source initiatives are participating in the Google Summer of Code, hosting a total of 24 student projects. The students with accepted projects will be mentored by Novell employees and community contributors with the openSUSE and Mono projects, which have participated in previous Google Summer of Code events, and Go OpenOffice (go-oo.org).

The Dutch ministries of Economic Affairs (EZ) and Education, Culture & Science (OCW) find it undesirable that students in the secondary vocational education system (MBO) are only being taught to use closed software systems from a few companies. Current ICT courses within the MBO schools have now started to pay attention to open source material. Heemskerk writes that they are negotiating with Novell on free support for the open source operating system Linux within the MBO schools.
