Ubuntu: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility, Apr 25, 2007
Feisty Fawn was released last week and as it seems so far, it is one of the most (if not the most) successful Linux distro release ever.
Ubuntu Feisty Fawn: Desktop Linux Matured, Mar 17, 2007
So far, I am very happy with Ubuntu because most things just work, the desktop looks fabulous and it does what I want it to do without having to dig where each option is (unlike Vista's new control panel).
GNOME, KDE: Can't We All Just Get Along?, Feb 22, 2007
What is wrong with KDE 3.x? What is wrong with GNOME 2.8+? These seem to be the two questions arising from the recent revival of Linus vs. GNOME spat.

Review: Freespire 1.0, Oct 25, 2006
My first choice to install on her Averatec laptop ended up being FreeSpire. I liked the possibilities of the OS -- based on a secure, tested, open source system but with Windows compatibility, multimedia capabilities, and some user friendliness.
Interview: Gael Duval, Oct 13, 2006
A few weeks ago, Gael Duval lifted the veil of secrecy surrounding his new project a little bit by 'leaking' some screenshots and information. Obviously, a lot of questions remained, and hence we contacted Gael Duval in order to ask him some basic questions about Ulteo. Read on for the mini-interview.
Review: Xandros Desktop 4.0, Oct 06, 2006
Here is OSNews' review of Xandros Desktop Home Edition Premium version 4.0 (a mouthfull). Xandros Systems was so kind as to provide OSNews with the top of the line version of their product, which includes, among other things, complete copies of Versora Progression Desktop, CrossOver Office, and various non-Free drivers and utilities.
Why Desktop Linux Will Not Take off, and Why You Don't Want It to, Sep 13, 2006
You must remember the period where various electronic devices, from phones to radios, were available in transparent cases. You may have found them utterly cool. Yet the simple fact that you can't find these things on the shelves anymore (except for do-it-yourself PC cases) means the crowd doesn't find them nearly that cool. While you may not see the link yet, this is exactly why the Linux desktop will never be popular.

Hi-Mobile.net once again kindly stepped up and sent us in the next-generation Motorola Linux-based ROKR-E2 feature phone. In the tradition of the ROKR devices, the E2 is also built around the idea of music on the go, while it's the first Linux phone to have an initial retail cost smaller than $256. Read inside for our detailed review, video and pictures.
The Chaos of Incompatibility in Mobile Linux, Jul 03, 2006
If you are a Linux enthusiast and you would like to see Linux become a powerful mobile platform rather than become a forked-like-hell implementation throwing itself left and right depending on some companies' wishes, then write to them and ask them to form an aliance that includes all existing aliances.
No Reasons Not to Be Dual Booting Linux and OSX, Mar 13, 2006
The usual reaction to 'Linux on the Mac' is 'Why Linux when you have OSX?' Various reasons can be cited for wanting Linux on your Mac. The primary one if of course simple curiosity: probably the thing that first drove you to non-Windows operating systems in the first place.
Review: Zenwalk Linux 2.0.1, Jan 30, 2006
I was interested to see how Zenwalk differs from Slackware, and after reading on their web site that version 2.01 is 'the biggest jump in Zenwalk evolution since the beginning of the project', I wanted to see how far Zenwalk has come since it was reviewed here as MiniSlack.
Torvalds: 'Use KDE', Dec 13, 2005
Without tip-toeing around the matter, Linus Torvalds made his preference in the GNOME vs. KDE matter quite clear on the GNOME-usability list: "I personally just encourage people to switch to KDE.
Review: Linux-based TVisto Series 3.5" Multimedia HDD Enclosure, Nov 30, 2005
Geeks.com sent us for a review an external hard drive enclosure case, the "TVisto Series 3.5" Multimedia HDD Enclosure" (2.5" series also available). But this is not just another hard drive enclosure, but also a multimedia jukebox. And it's running uCLinux, an embedded version of Linux.

Review: Ubuntu v5.04 Hoary, Aug 23, 2005
My search for "the perfect Linux operating system" this time brings me to the latest incarnation of Ubuntu, version 5.04, also known as the "Hoary Hedgehog Release". Previously I was using Fedora Core 4, however due to some minor bugs it had, I wanted to try something different.

Plug it into a Windows or Linux machine and launch a virtual Linux desktop that routes all network traffic through multiple network proxies using the Tor network. This provides a totally secure way to access your data, even when using an internet cafe PC or an untrusted network.
Portable Freedom with Debian, Apr 13, 2005
At university, I didn't lift weights to keep in shape. I carried my textbooks in one arm and lugged a 12-pound laptop in the other. That heavy beast never lived up to its promise of freedom but my T20 running Debian Linux has.
