It seems to me that Linux is a viable solution for any educator with old, seemingly useless computers, and administrators shackled down by exorbitant licensing costs of running OS X or Windows on dozens or hundreds of machines ought to consider it as an alternative.

A new and more dangerous version of a remote-control virus that targets computers running the Linux operating system may be in the wild, but security experts do not expect the malicious code to spread widely.

According to preliminary analyses, the virus appears to be a "smarter" variant of the Remote Shell Trojan (RST), discovered last September, that infects programs written for Linux, an alternative to Microsoft's Windows.

Red Hat is planning to set up a development and support center in the country by mid-2002 to relocate and consolidate some of its current operations in Philippines, the U.K., Australia and Japan. Javed Tapia, director of Red Hat India, said the company would like to set up a global support center in India because of the low cost of doing business and the pool of available of technical skills in the country.

Before the acquisition, Akopia was an e-commerce platform that created Web sites that retailers use as their online storefronts. Red Hat will integrate Akopia's Interchange e-commerce platform, which allows transactions online, into its own software products. Akopia will take on the name Red Hat and will market all of Red Hat's e-commerce services
