 Nokia helps port Firefox to Qt, Aug 19, 2008

The Firefox web browser has been ported to the Qt widget toolkit through a collaborative development effort by Nokia and Mozilla. This port will facilitate much stronger visual integration between Firefox and KDE-based Linux environments and will also simplify the process of bringing Firefox to mobile platforms that support Qt.

The open source Maemo platform, which is used on Nokia's Internet Tablet devices, will soon support Trolltech's Qt development toolkit.

Trolltech, the mobile Linux company that is to be bought by Nokia, has announced enhancements to its Qtopia platform.

Nokia said it will offer 843 million Norwegian crowns ($153 million) for all the shares in loss-making Norwegian mobile software firm Trolltech to support its new push into services and software.

Trolltech CEO Haavard Nord announced today at the KDE release event that the company's cross-platform open-source Qt application development toolkit will be released under the GPL 3.

Trolltech, whose Qtopia platform is already the foundation for many consumer-level handsets in Asia, was a founder member of the LiPS Forum. However, it quietly left that group in the second half of last year. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Monday, Trolltech announced that it has now joined the rival LiMo Foundation.

The LiMo Foundation has added some members to its ranks as competition among new mobile Linux platforms heats up.

Linux-based application platform vendor Trolltech expects a higher growth rate in the second half than the first six months but said growth for the full year may fall below the approximately 40% recorded for each of the three previous years.

Trolltech will provide free phones and SDKs (software development kits) to developers willing to target its Qtopia application development framework for mobile phones. The Qtopia Greenphone Grant Program will provide an unspecified number of awardees with Qtopia SDKs, along with Trolltech's open, Linux-based Greenphone target device.
