Back in its day the nearly forgotten BeOS booted in about 15 second on my ancient P133, but now with dual-core mega memory fast-boot BIOS machines my heavyweight distribution of choice (still SuSE), boots from BIOS to GUI in about 60 seconds with no modification, and I think I have enough patience to wait for one minute. In days past I usually always did about 8 of the ten things listed in this article anyway, but one thing the author didn't mention was upgrading your aging hardware.
