Market share... by: cadstarsucks
If it were only the pirates they would not care...problem is if all the developing world embraces Linux and open source their precious upgrade cycle revenue stream would dry up - and they know it!

Re: Market share... by: nycace36
Not only this, but M$'s establishing their "precious upgrade cycle revenue stream" in the first place depends upon their first establishing their targeted bait/enticements to those developing world countries most likely to embrace Linux and open source.

A grand BAIT-AND-SWITCH scheme, a.k.a. Vendor Lock-In Tactics.

First offer as Bait very low-cost or free [dumbed-down] M$ software to educational/other institutions for key Mindshare & Marketshare investment.
Turn a blind-eye to piracy unless or until an unacceptable level of such piracy occurs. Or unless/until such piracy becomes uncontrolled and spreads to other countries.
Next relatively easy step for M$ is to Switch all such institutions right into M$'s "precious upgrade cycle revenue stream" as noted above.
In effect, this BAT-AND-SWITCH is ultimately for the sole benefit of M$'s bottom line, notwithstanding any expressed claims to the contrary.

Not just MS... by: JMPA
Well, MS is not the only one to benefit from turning a blind eye to piracy. I'm thinking of the hardware vendors here. THEIR upgrade cycle is shorter with Windows too (be it legit or pirate, does not matter), since it is clear that a Linux computer can have a much longer useful life.
