For one it might take the discussion about media formats broader and put more focus on free formats. As a side-effect it might also influence the discussion on patents.
That said, of course it may also lead to fewer buys and therefor 'prove' Dell's linux adventure unsuccesfull, what i would regret... |

| its missing choice. dell is treating the linux offering just like they do with windows. i, for one, dont like ubuntu (actually, anything debian based) and if i choose to install a different flavor of linux, i am voiding the warranty. dell FTL. |

hardware compatibility matters most. At least, now we know that all hardware features of a laptop or desktop line will function.
Codecs?..., one can easily snap in UbuntuStudio, Linux Mint, or download the applications supporting proprietary codecs.
As for me, I am tired of downloading those proprietary codecs and see to it that I distribute my media files under the OGG non-proprietary formats. Free Software Communities need also to see to it that ogg becomes pervasive -- like somebody need to step in the plate and create a VCD-like spec that uses Ogg format rather than the proprietary Mpegs.
Having Ubuntu does not restrict choice since most GNU/Linux users have the option to install their favorite Distro. It's more of convincing the GNU/Linux distro maintainers to make their flavor play well with Dell and that they too will exert effort in offering support for any technical problem that shall arise. I have every good reason to believe that the Ubuntu folks will step in when there are technical problems, thus the reason of voiding warranty if you use other distro because nobody yet is brave enough to offer tech support and risk their name with it. In fact, when you download a free and open source software you get it as-is without any warranty implied. We simply have to thank the wonderful forums and those patient people to give light to every problem we encounter.
