Nothing to do with M$ by: cadstarsucks
It has everything to do with M$. IE their long and continuing history of bullying the supply chain

lets not forget by: sakuramboo
sure, many of the most used pieces of software dont have a linux or mac port, but who really controls those companies? most of the programs are designed with VB or .NET using the windows API heavily, making it almost impossible to port the application without doing a complete rewrite of the code. and why is something like .NET being used? because microsoft feels that they have the right to tell them "If you use our APIs, we will give you guys some of our money to help pay your developers" and then, when you go to school, they teach VB and .NET and also flip a few bucks to the school to not allow any cross-platform language classes.

as long as microsoft has this kind of influence, they will always be in control until the consumers get fed up with it and switch on their own to an alternate platform.

Why all the focus on Home Computers? by: scattershot
It's the workplace systems that really dictate what is bought. Think back to when computers first started. They didn't start in people's homes then moved into the workplace, it was the other way around. If a worker uses windows for eight hours a day at work and knows how to get around the OS, why would anyone expect that person to use Linux or Mac at home? MACs are mostly used by graphic artists who also use MACs at home because that is what they use in the office. Win over the workplace and the hardware vendors will follow quickly. It is a matter of economics - home users don't buy new systems every three years in the same volume as companies do. Forget the home user - focus on the workstation. Oh - and also on the gamerz as they push the hardware. ;)
