I haven't tried SLD yet, but SUSE Slick uses Kynaptic to download a variety of apps from online sites including packman which has a lot of third party stuff. I think this point is moot for their target market of the enterprise, as the sysadmins will be doing all of that in any case. After installing rpms, the application normally appears under the relevant menu section where one can drag it onto a desktop icon, if you like desktop clutter and filling up your RAM.
The documentation comment is a bit strange as SLD must come with a multitude of applications compared with stock Windows and the SUSE user manual has always been good value coupled with the help systems.
Of course the problem here may be one of trying to turn a 24 speed Linux Lambo semi trailer into a 2 speed Microsoft Moped.
