This is a comment on news story: Grisoft predicts Linux virus plague

and patches will be available the next day by: CMonster3
Thank goodness it's open source! Security patches/fixes will be out the next day.

Unix, ergo "Linux" has been the backbone of backroom and mission critical applications from the very beginning, tempting wouldbe hackers with big iron glory since the early days of network computing. I keep hearing this MYTH that "hackers" will be writing virus and malware once Linux becomes as popular as Windows. The MYTH seems to be propigated to deter the adoption of open source and is possibly wishful thinking of the part of anti-virus/spyware vendors who are making millions off the backside of slipshod security in MS Windows. Hacking exploits will remain an ongoing problem; the difference being that *nix, properly administered, eliminates the vast majority of script-kiddie annoyance.

I look back in time and see "sendmail" perhaps as the bane of the *nix, and the infamous Internet worm of the mid 80s, but security has been steadily improving since then. I look ahead in my crystal ball and don't see a huge number of "Outlook" type worms, viri, or trojans spreading rampantly in the *nix wild. We know that the *nix and open source security model is a cut above that "other" OS, with the possible exception of some run-as-root distros.
