All comments on news story: $299 Linux PC hits US shelves
It's a reply to comment:

Frys Electronics has been selling $279 Linspire PC's by: cdrworm
Frys has a $279 budget Linspire system that goes on sale for $99-$149. Comes with AMD Sempron 2200+ processor, 128MB RAM, 52x CD-ROM, 40GB HD, Keyboard/Mice/Speakers, and Linspire 4.5.

Its pretty fast considered it only has 128MB of ram. I later installed Ubuntu.

What I'd love to see are high-end Linux PCs. (Like what Apple sells)

$200 Walmart computers! by: kokanee
Walmart sells 3 computers under $200. One with Linspire, one with XandROS and one without an operating system (at an $11 discount). I would go for the XandROS one myself.

Fry's has had it as low as $99 - but has been at $149 lately. by: sqa
Fry's has had it as low as $99 - but has been at $149 lately. Fry's comes up with some pretty good sales at times. The LinSpire system is a good base Linux system (I toss LinSpire and reload with suSE Linux). Run as web server and email server headless without any issues.

I know, but I missed the sale and got it for $149. Its not bad and suprisingly it runs pretty good. Sadly by default it doesnt come with a word processor like OpenOffice.org.

I wiped out the entire system and installed ubuntu. Its perfect for linux server. I got an airlink router and airlink usb wireless adapter for real cheap so I'm about to throw this server in the closet.

Why buy preinstalled? by: lgrinberg
Wouldn't it be simpler to just buy a custom computer with no OS installed? It will then be easier to configure it to suit your needs (e.g. I would delete Linspire and install Debian...)

stores need demo units, no OS? no demo? by: cdrworm
Right now stores are using the linspire system to get people into the door. They then disparage the product, linux, as incompatible with 90% of the stuff they sell so people will by a more expensive, capable, windows system. This is why linux machines should be priced competitively with windows boxes.
