"Slackware may drop GNOME"... by: DaBlade
...and so they should, when KDE is the best.*
*This is my opinion, so if you're a die-hard GNOME fan, plz don't get insulted. I'm a KDE fan.
I don't like gnome because it's too restrictive. KDE gives me a lot more options.

If you want GNOME that badly Slack users... by: KnuxT15
...build it yourself. =P
The sources are freely available on www.gnome.org with install guides. Heck, it'd be best if someone built GNOME on Slack then released binaries for it. Actually, I'd like to see GNOME do what KDE does: have a page with a list of all unofficial binaries submitted to them. That way, you can just download the binaries and not worry about compile errors (which happen).

Oh, DaBlade, I use both GNOME and KDE, even though I use KDE more than GNOME. =P

GNOME and Slackware by: TheGoreFather
As a Slackware user using Gnome, KDE, and WindowMaker and FVWM, I don't see much of a problem. I use Gnome on Slackware because it looks good, and I use KDE and every other Window Manager on SUSE because they look good and work.

Now if only E would come with Slackware. I love E and it's beautiful, but it doesn't come with Slackware, and I try too keep packages at a minimum so I don't like adding many. The only things I add are swaret, and before 10, Irssi, and I recently allowed one more package too be used on Slackware: Naim. Which is a text based AIM client so I don't have too load X.

Gnome needs to step up. by: slashdot
It be wired if Gnome were not in a package together with KDE, it would. I like gnome, and I recommended to all the new linux users I show, because its very very straight forward. Especialy on a Red Hat distro. KDE is for the person that likes to customize everything, but they could get lost too like a linux newbie. (or BSD, etc) But I guess this is Slackware, and Slackware is for more advance, or ppl trying to learn fast, on linux.

Re: Gnome needs to step up. by: ejou
hmmm as an ex KDE fan, i never used gnome much really... and the few times i did, it seemed too slow on my old computer. For about the last 6 months or so i started using fluxbox and i think it r0cks... however, i do think it's not a good idea to remove gnome or kde from base slackware distro, since they are not only the eye-candy desktop but include a lot of useful apps you can start and use even if you dont use the whole desktop (for example, i like GDM WAY BETTER than KDM). So i'd suggest paul kept gnome lying around somewhere, even if it takes a third CD (which i didn't last time i checked)

This is news? by: Rich Lohman
Beg your pardon, especially all of the Slackware fans, but this didn't exactly strike me as news. News would be 'Slackware Finally Updates Installer', or 'Slackware Reinstates Online Forum', or 'Slackware Breaths New Life into Distribution by [insert anything here]'.
I was a huge Slack advocate. Nothing else could measure up, in my opinion. Then, when WindRiver left Slackware out in the cold, the user base came together, and helped, through purchases and donations, to keep Slackware alive. It was beautiful - the true spirit of open source. Then, Volkerding & crew cut out the forum, post two to three news postings per YEAR, and essentially cut out any improvements in the distro except for the occasional package updates. After the poor management of this distribution, it's continued existence is the real news. Cutting more from the distribution? That's not news - that's par for the course.

The installer doesn't need an update. It's easy as can be, and I've yet too read a manual for using it, but I've written 3 Slackware installation tutorials. It's easy and runs on older hardware, leave the installer alone.

I've only been using Linux a year and a half so I wasn't around for everything you were talking about, but Pat seems like a cool guy. He's answered E-Mails from me when I had never bought anything, and I just recently bought the Slackware 4 CD - ROM set, Slackware TShirt, Slackware Essentials book, The Complete Linuxc Reference, and a Slackware pin.

My order came a day later (I paid extra for overnight air mail, I have the patience of a rattle snake sometimes) and I was happy with it.

Now, you did bring up some good points:

The page could get updated more, as it is only like twice too three times a year. And one things I'm very happy about:

Slackware Current has VSFTPd and ProFTPd. I hate ProFTPd so I'm glad you'll have a choice with current.

I was as well very happy when Irssi finally got put into Slackware. In my first E-Mail too Pat, that was what I said and he had it in. So that was a nice treat because I didn't have too install from source anymore. pkgtool is a great pplication also.
