I don't think it is fair to compare JAVA to PERL or Python. They were designed for entirely different purposes than JAVA. Also, SUN makes a good point: their position being "open source?...why?" Based on how SUN licenses JAVA and SUNs good behavior so far in adhering to standards, I don't see why it is necessary for the future of JAVA to make it open source. Besides, if it is that big of a deal then someone could write a cleanroom implementation of JAVA...Does someone want to do this or should we just EXPECT a for-profit corporation to release their intellectual property to the masses?
