Mr. DisplayLink goes to Linux, May 15, 2009

Windows and Mac users have been taking advantage of DisplayLink for the last couple of years. The technology allows users to connect multiple monitors--as well as docking stations and projectors--to a single system via USB only; no need for any fancy-pants graphics cards. Today, DisplayLink announced it is planning to bring its technology to Linux.

Canonical has begun beta-testing a file-synchronisation service called Ubuntu One for its Ubuntu Linux desktop operating system.

As far as I know, nothing tragic happened as a result of Thursday's Google outage but it does remind us how important Google has become to many people's lives and livelihoods.

Someone is planning to buy a netbook. Should s/he go with Linux or Windows?

The first alpha release of Ubuntu Karmic Koala - also known as Ubuntu 9.10 - was released yesterday. As a first alpha release it is not recommended for most users, just those happy to live on the bleeding edge.

The KDE Community, a provider in free and open source software for desktop and portable computing on Wednesday announced the immediate availability of KDE 4.3 Beta 1, the first preview of the 3rd iteration over the KDE 4 desktop, applications and development platform.

The East Rand Linux Users Group (Elug) and SA Linux have agreed to work together to jointly promote Linux and open source software in South Africa and increase collaboration between open source companies.

Despite a bevy of questions—looming competition from Oracle, takeover rumors and a weak economy—Red Hat appears to be humming along, according to Jeffries analyst Katherine Egbert. But in the long run, Red Hat will have to be subsumed into a large company—most likely IBM.
