OpenOffice.org 3.1: Looking Sharp, May 07, 2009

OpenOffice.org 3.1 is now available, and one of the suite's most important changes involves big improvements to its handling of on-screen graphics.

I like Ubuntu 9.04 a lot, but ATI graphic drivers don't work and play well with it.

As the Internet becomes more vast open source communities need to be not only educating potential users on the benefits of open source software but also encouraging them to become part of the community.

Compared to its predecessors, OpenOffice 3.1 offers a whole range of new features. Instant eye catchers are the improved anti-aliasing for graphics, better chart functionality, and the new text highlighting in Writer. However, inconspicuous new features like custom document property fields and the OpenOffice User Feedback Program are just as interesting.

Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst thinks so.

When Microsoft purchased Hotmail in December of 1997 for an estimated $400m, it ran on FreeBSD. But Redmond ripped out the open source OS and replaced it with Windows 2000. Or at least, it tried to.

Despite the positive buzz generated by Windows 7, it is only a matter of time before Linux takes its rightful place at the top of the operating-system pile.
