Open source challenges students to think, Apr 23, 2009

The "open" characteristic of open source tools helps enhance, rather than complicate, the teaching process, say its exponents.

Version 9.04 of the Ubuntu Linux distribution was made available for download on Thursday.

Red Hat, Inc. today announced a call for presentations for its Open Source Cloud Computing Forum, a virtual event scheduled to take place July 22, 2009. The Forum will focus on how open source software and standards will advance the development and value of cloud computing environments.

"Consolidation" will be the watchword as Oracle absorbs Sun Microsystems, but it shouldn't ignore the plum technologies in Sun's portfolio.

The recession is apparently driving some firms to look at Linux as a cost-saving alternative to Microsoft – is it time for open source to take off?
