Distribution Release: SUSE Linux Enterprise 11, Mar 24, 2009

Novell has announced the release of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop and Server 11.

Microsoft is a very big company, so perhaps it's not surprising that it hasn't been able to articulate a coherent message around open-source software.

Shares of software distributor Red Hat Inc. fell Tuesday with the broader market after climbing steeply with Monday's rally, helped by market talk of a potential buyout from Oracle Corp.

The latest Linux version includes many new file system features and a new framework for controlling graphics hardware, in the form of kernel-based mode setting. New network features allow operation as an access point (WAP) and deliver WiMAX support.

Steve Ballmer recently caught flack for essentially saying that Apple users pay an Apple tax of $500 for buying Macs compared to PCs. Does that mean that Linux users are forced to pay a Microsoft tax every time they buy a PC with Microsoft software on it?

Oracle is not buying Red Hat. The rumor mill has it that Oracle may be buying Red Hat. Don't believe it. All it took was one mention that Oracle might do well to own Red Hat, but that the timing wasn't right, by Jefferies & Co. analyst Katherine Egbert for people to start talking up Oracle buying Red Hat. Folks, it's not going to happen. IBM will buy Sun. Oracle buying Red Hat? No.

The latest version of SUSE Linux Enterprise, Novell Inc.'s commercial distribution of the open-source operating system, bears more fruit from Novell's controversial two-and-a-half-year-old interoperability alliance with Microsoft Corp.
