Automotive Linux drives innovation, Jul 21, 2008

Some fundamental shifts have been taking place in the automotive industry over the past two years that will dramatically change the way multimedia entertainment equipment is designed.

Linux (and principally Red Hat Enterprise Linux) has become the primary production platform for the animation industry, largely due to the engineering efforts of DreamWorks. Behind that effort sits Ed Leonard, chief technology officer at DreamWorks, who has been recognized for his work with an Annie Award for "promoting the Linux open system for animation in animation studios and gaming software development."

Expensive and error-prone digital tapes has forced BBC UK, one of the world's largest television broadcasters, to look at using computers running Linux to help produce its programs.

We are using two dozen open source products, thanks to which we have saved close to $6 million for Virgin America in the last two years. Products today are mature enough to not cause undue risk. Our e-Commerce site, which does 80 per cent of our business today, runs on open source.
