Mandriva Linux 2009 releases new test version, Sep 26, 2008

Following the kernel bug that plagued Linux distros earlier this week, Mandriva Linux has issued a second release candidate for its upcoming Mandriva Linux 2009 release.

Getting new software installed on Linux doesn't have to be hard, but it can differ depending on what you're installing

Last year Nokia bought out its Symbian partners for $410 million and then open sourced it. Now it would appear that the company's ambitions relative to open source have only just begun.

Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, didn't mince his words when stating his opinion of Solaris, Sun's operating system, to InfoWorld. "The future is Linux and Microsoft Windows. It is not Unix or Solaris", he said, claiming that there were hardly any new Solaris installations, ever more Solaris users were migrating to Linux on cost grounds, OEM manufacturers were turning away from Solaris, and Sun was in financial difficulties.

It was nearly two years ago at the 2006 Oracle OpenWorld conference that Oracle CEO Larry Ellison unveiled a plan to have Oracle provide support to Red Hat's own Linux customers.

Microsoft encourages us to think of Linux, when we think of it as all, as an also-ran operating systems for nerds. The last thing Microsoft wants us to think about is that there are some spaces where Microsoft is a distant number two and Linux is on top
