Linux is set to make a major impact in the mobile computing realm, the executive director of the Linux Foundation stressed at a conference Monday morning.

After nearly a decade of active involvement in open source, IBM's commitment to Linux is broad and deep, said Inna Kuznetsova, the director of IBM Linux strategy. This vision of IBM's rapport with Linux is shared by most, but not all, IBM observers.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Mobile Internet Device editions of Linux are gearing up to compete with Windows on mini-PC devices this year.

In an ITWire tale, Paul Harapin, VMware's managing director for Australia and New Zealand said Windows is already being replaced by virtual appliances running on Linux. In ten-years, there will be no more Windows.

Last weekend a friend was moaning about endless problems with Windows XP on his desktop PC. We installed Ubuntu 7.04 on it. The problems went away.

After the technical sessions concluded on the first day of OSCON, some attendees headed across town to see Mark Shuttleworth, the charismatic founder of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, give a presentation to local Portland group Legion of Tech.

I am on a roll here with reviewing distros, so I thought I would take the advice of my readers and add SuSE to the roll call. I went into this with little expectation simply because I have had less-than-stellar experiences with SuSE in the past. This time, however, my experience was much, much different. And if I ever doubted the power and useability of SuSE, I was very wrong.
