Open source phone goes mass-market, Jun 25, 2008

Openmoko has begun shipping its Linux-based, open source Neo Freerunner phone to five newly announced distributors, in Germany, France, and India, says the company. The Neo Freerunner features an open hardware design, and a Linux-based operating system that users are free to modify.

Many open source developers remain sceptical of Sun because their memories of the company focus on Sun's interactions with the community in 2001/2002, which Sun's chief open source officer Simon Phipps concedes was a period where Sun "screwed up".

2.6.26-rc8 has been released today.
