Asus to launch 'instant on' Linux laptops, May 30, 2008

Asus will be releasing five laptop models with the Linux-based Splashtop operating system that supposedly boots in just a few seconds.

Software maker Novell reported second quarter Linux revenue of $29m (£14.5m) from flat total revenue of $232m, profit reached $2m compared with a $12m loss for the same period last year.

The large magazine publisher Bonnier Corp. switched its database operating system from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4 to Oracle Enterprise Linux to get better support, and to boot it saved money.

A popular distribution of the Linux open source operating system is vulnerable to hacks that could leave users' personal data exposed to identity thieves, according to IT consulting group Gartner.

If you and your friend do not want to spend a lot of money, putting the Linux operating system on the old PC is a much less expensive option. Many versions of Linux have a graphical point-and-click interface these days, but they still may have a learning curve for new users.

Although running some form of Linux within a Windows environment has been done before, no one has been able to implement it with 100 percent success--yet. But if the recently released beta of Ulteo Virtual Desktop is any indication, it appears that this achievement is now within reach.
