The development team behind the Fedora Project, which is primarily sponsored by Red Hat, today released the first test version of the Fedora 9 Linux distribution, planned for late April, for download - just under two weeks later than originally planned.

The BBC says it will make a download version of its iPlayer available for Macs before the end of this year.

Every now and then, someone suggests that Debian GNU/Linux should be more commercial. To further this goal, some create derivative distros like Linspire, Ubuntu, or Xandros, or organizations like the stillborn DCC Alliance. Others act as pundits, whispering advice from off-stage, like Debian founder Ian Murdock, or, more recently, columnist Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols.

It's normal to build up a mental picture of a person based on what you know about them, especially if you plan to meet that person. At times, the image is not too far removed from reality. At others, the mental image and reality could not be more different.

“One of the things I did with Linux from very early on was when somebody sends me changes, they retain all copyright in those changes. I don’t have any more rights than anybody else,” he says. “Your rights when it comes to Linux are directly what you put into it.”
