It’s become an annual event. Steve Ballmer shoots his yap about how Linux and open source violate Microsoft patents. The open-source community says, “OK, show us your cards, your patents,” and Ballmer shuts up for six months or so.
Full BBC iPlayer To Remain Microsoft-Only, Oct 19, 2007
The BBC, slammed by the British public and government alike for handing its iPlayer program to Microsoft, has made clear that the full application will remain Windows-only. Only a stripped-down YouTube-alike version is planned for other platforms. From the Guardian:

Chris DiBona started using free software on his home PC when he was at college, and for the same reason that Linus wrote Linux: because he couldn't get on the machines in the computer lab. Later, DiBona joined VA Linux, which sold open source-based hardware systems, and ended up as one of the editors on Slashdot.
KDE 4.0 Beta 3 Released, Oct 19, 2007
The KDE Community is happy to release the third Beta for KDE 4.0. This Beta is aimed at further polishing of the KDE codebase and also marks the freeze of the KDE Development Platform. We are joined in this release by the KOffice project which releases its 4th alpha release, bringing many improvements in OpenDocument support, a KChart Flake shape and much more to those willing to test.
