GNOME 2.20 officially released, Sep 20, 2007

The GNOME community announced a new release today after six months of development. GNOME is a desktop environment primarily used on Linux and other open-source platforms. GNOME 2.20 includes numerous improvements and new features that benefit users, administrators, and developers.

A recent article has surfaced discussing what the author thinks are reasons Linux won't succeed on the desktop. It is his mentality, and not his reasons, which are the real culprits.

In the print edition of Forbes there's a great (albeit sometimes painful) tradition of doing "follow-through" articles where a reporter either takes a victory lap for making a good call or falls on his sword for making a bad one. Online publications don't typically ask for follow-throughs. But I need to write one.

A few days late, SCO finally released its financial report, Form 10-Q, on Sept. 18 for the quarter ending on July 31. The news was bad. How bad? SCO admits that "there is substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern."

Commissioner Neelie Kroes said criticism by a top U.S. Justice Department official of an EU court decision against Microsoft was "totally unacceptable."

The One Laptop per Child's XO, better known as the $100 laptop, gets most of the headlines but NComputing is showing in Macedonia, with its Ubuntu Linux based servers and virtual PC terminals, that there's more than one way to get inexpensive Linux desktops into students' hands.

Ubuntu, the three-year-old Linux operating system that fast acquired the status of darling in the open-source community, has had a big 12 months.
