Here's what we know beyond doubt. First, the Linux desktop is gaining in popularity. Second, it's doing so at the expense of the Windows desktop. After that, things get muddy.

SCO Group's breach-of-contract and copyrights claims against IBM have been annihilated by the decision that Novell, not SCO, is the rightful owner of the Unix copyrights, according to IBM.

Palm has canceled the Linux-based Foleo mobile companion, CEO Ed Colligan announced today on the company's blog. Colligan said the move would cost the company $10 million in earnings, but allow it to focus on a single Linux smartphone development platform going forward.

Commercial Linux distributor Mandriva may not be as big as Novell or Red Hat, but the Franco-American company does its own share of innovation in the Linux space.

Microsoft conceded that it had been unsuccessful in its attempt to make its document formats, Open XML, an ISO standard in an early morning press release on Sept. 4.
