Businesses having second thoughts about Vista, Jul 31, 2007

Fewer businesses are now planning to move to Windows Vista than seven months ago, according to a survey by patch management vendor PatchLink Corp., while more said they will either stick with the Windows they have, or turn to Linux or Mac OS X.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is gunning for Google. But at least one analyst is warning it’s a mighty long shot.

Microsoft has stirred up debate in the open source community by announcing that it will be submitting two licenses to the Open Source Initiative (OSI) for approval.

Linus Torvalds, creator and maintainer of the Linux operating system kernel, has reacted angrily to suggestions that the kernel's development process is skewed in a way that prevents improvements on the desktop.

Sun Microsystems, the world's third-largest maker of computer servers for businesses, said on Monday it swung to a quarterly profit from a year-earlier loss as it reduced costs, sending the shares higher.

The head of the open-source group that will decide whether to certify Microsoft Corp.'s "shared source" software licenses as open-source licenses said that more than half of Redmond's licenses appear to automatically fail the group's rules.

In response to inquiries regarding a German court's ruling that Skype had breached the GPL, the company told LinuxDevices.com today that it "has not acted improperly." The alleged violation was associated with the method by which Skype "distributed" GPL-licensed source code with a Linux-powered VoIP handset.

Linux systems' power consumption is rapidly becoming a top concern for operators of large data centers. A University of California Berkeley study recently attributed 90 percent of the increase in data center power consumption to servers priced at less than US$25,000 each, the market where Linux is most important.
