Another Microsoft Windfall, May 29, 2007

The dead hand of monopoly has fallen on our schools. According to this morning's Herald, it seems that supposedly vast Vista profits aren't enough for Microsoft. Now they're taxing Apple computers too.

This month's announcement by Microsoft to acquire digital marketing services firm aQuantive has revealed little on how the companies will integrate their IT, but inside information indicates the deal may be Redmond's largest commitment to free software.

How much more do we know about the Microsoft-Novell deal now, after Novell posted some of the details of three agreements on the web on Saturday as part of a regular filing with the SEC? Precisely nothing that we did not know earlier

To me, Microsoft's action is an obvious admission that they're losing the software wars, without actually admitting to it.

In an op-ed piece published by BusinessWeek today, Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin stated his organization will be ready to fund the legal efforts of anyone who produces Linux software who's threatened with - or sued on account of - patent infringement. If necessary, Zemlin writes, the foundation will use its own patent portfolio to mount countersuits.
