Red Hat Inc. posted a profit decline of 25 percent and failed to meet analyst expectations for revenue Thursday, compounding earlier fears that larger competitors may bully the budding Linux provider.

But shares of Raleigh-based Red Hat recovered from an after-hours free fall on speculation that another tech giant could boost Red Hat's standing. Dell Inc. said Wednesday that it would offer the Linux operating system pre-loaded on its desktops and laptops, but it did not identify which Linux distributor would get a deal.
