PDF to become an open, ISO standard, Jan 29, 2007

Adobe Systems Inc. on Jan. 29 announced that it has released the full PDF (Portable Document Format) 1.7 specification to AIIM, the Association for Information and Image Management. AIIM, in turn, will start working on making PDF an ISO standard.

Multinational mobile handset makers may be dabbling with Linux-powered phones for Asia and the U.S., but the Australian market has been largely ignored, that is until OpenMoko arrives later this year.

If there is mass take-up of free and open source software in any country over the next few years, that country is likely to be China.

The MEPIS project has released the fourth beta release of version 6.0 of its KDE- and Ubuntu-based SimplyMEPIS-32 and SimplyMEPIS-64 Linux distributions. Beta 4 introduces the 2.6.17-20 kernel, WiFi support improvements, and the ability to run MEPIS live from a USB key.

Open Source Development Labs' Desktop Linux Working Group has published what amounts to an annual report on the state of desktop Linux, providing a point-by-point update on how the technology is doing on the client side.

Call it Red Hat's (Quote) forward spin velocity regarding Linux management tools. With competition such as Oracle offering full Red Hat support on their own products, Red Hat is now expanding and improving its Linux management footprint.
