Traditional hardware design is a top-down process. If you need a CPU, you choose one from the various manufacturers’ catalogues and then build your device around its specifications. If a given part doesn’t suit your needs perfectly, you can sometimes work around its limitations in software, but otherwise you’re stuck. Only the largest electronics vendors can afford to dabble with custom components.

If there is one open source Ajax project that is leading the pack these days, it might be Dojo. It's not necessarily better in any particular way than the others, but it is both broad and deep with a big selection of very customizable widgets. These traits may explain why both IBM and Sun have recently signed on to support the Dojo Foundation and its work.

Reading between the lines, or reading into his comments my own bias, this sounds like a clarion call to use more open source software.
