Torvalds' comments on GPLv3 committees refuted, Aug 07, 2006

Linus Torvalds had harsh comments about the committees organized by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) to help it draft version 3 of the GNU Public License (GPLv3). However, so far as NewsForge can determine, none of those actually involved in the process agree with Torvalds' assessment that the FSF isn't listening to feedback.

We've been talking, meeting, and arguing over GPL 3 for nearly two years. Recently, the second draft of the long-awaited rewrite of the popular free-software license arrived. The debate has begun all over again. If we're lucky, we'll see a finished GPL 3 some time in early 2007.

Mark Shuttleworth founded a version of Linux, Ubuntu, that offers some a conspicuous advantage over products from Red Hat: There's no difference between the version that's free of charge and the version that comes with long-term support. But while Shuttleworth agrees there's competition with the leading Linux seller, he said in his blog Thursday that "Red Hat's demise is not our goal."

Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 is a strong contender to Windows on corporate clients, with a well-thought-out desktop environment and some innovative features.
