In a surprise move, Microsoft is bending to pressure from governments and will sponsor an open source project to build tools that enable conversion between its Open XML formats in Office 2007 and OpenDocument (ODF).

I can sum up the way Microsoft beat the competition in just a few words. Microsoft won the market by leveraging its virtual monopoly on the desktop.

The UK-based project team developing Gentoox, a Gentoo-based Linux operating system for the Xbox featuring Linux kernel 2.4.32 and the KDE desktop, announced its latest release on July 5, Gentoox Home v5.0. It is the team's first new release since v4.0 in June 2005.

Many Linux users had given up on ever seeing a new version of Skype, the popular VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) client, for Linux. They were wrong. Late in June, Skype released a beta version 1.3.

Massachusetts is sticking to its plan to adopt OpenDocument, despite a critical report calling for a delay to the high-profile move.

"They should focus on the litigation and cut out other distractions," says analyst Rob Enderle of tech market researcher Enderle Group. "Their business is litigation. If they lose, they're done." Enderle at one time believed that SCO had a good chance of winning its case, but now is skeptical.

There's "Not much left for SCO but to appeal this almost-fatal ruling in its already weak case. Yes, it is the beginning of the end. I expect summary judgment will be the stake that kills this vampire long before it gets to trial."
