Sun exec: Java not to end up like Linux, May 19, 2006

There is lot of open-source Linux out there under GPL [General Public License], etc., and that also seems to be a very interesting and successful model. I do want to make sure that there is no issue or question about Sun's intent when we go and do this.

Six South Africans were this afternoon the first candidates worldwide to write the brand new Ubuntu Professional certification. They wrote the exams, backed by the Linux Professional Association (LPI), during the LinuxWorld show in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Usually media shy, the 36-year-old Finn invited Kristie Lu Stout and the Global Office team into his home for an insight into life at the helm of the operating system that is giving Microsoft some serious headaches.

We definitely see Linux as the fastest-growing operating system platform for our application server and database server. But obviously, it's the fastest-growing from a very small point. It's not going to go away. It's going to be a significant play, but we also have a significant market share of customers coming in on Windows.

A widely backed effort is under way to create a standard Linux desktop to help break Microsoft's stranglehold.
