Bill Gates mocks MIT's $100 laptop project, Mar 16, 2006

Microsoft Corp. Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates on Wednesday mocked a $100 laptop computer for developing countries being developed with the backing of rival Google Inc. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologys being developed with the backing of rival Google Inc. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

An IBM researcher working on operating systems, virtualisation and computer security has developed an application that enables Linux, and potentially Windows XP, to boot on an Intel Mac.

"We aren't looking to compete with the mainstream PC brands such as Lenovo and Apple as we are in a different class altogether," Zhang [Fuxin] said. The laptop uses Linux software and does not support Microsoft's Windows program, he said.

Mandriva executive Gael Duval today confirmed rumors that he was laid off from the company he co-founded, along with a number of other Mandriva employees. Duval told NewsForge that he is going to bring suit against Mandriva for "abusive layoff."

The HDD will be 60GB, be completely upgradeable, and support Linux OS. This is so that it can act as a home server and store entertainment files.
