Windows shut on young developers

Recent remarks by Microsoft executives and updates to its Visual Basic show the company understands the need to attract developers to its products. But these moves could be a case of too little too late.

The rot set in when Microsoft added the product activation mechanism to the Windows operating system. Clearly this is designed to ensure that people don't use unauthorised copies of Windows software, and there are some good reasons for it. But life and business is rarely black and white, and although software pirates should be persecuted and punished, I don't count students in the same category.
