In small pockets and in small numbers, organisations are rebuilding the foundations of their IT systems. The trend is being led by the public sector, with authorities such as the city of Munich and the Thai government announcing policies in favour of open source software, and in particular, the Linux operating system.

Businesses too are starting to ask whether they should follow suit, and move away from expensive proprietary operating systems. This is a gratifying development for Jack Messman, chief executive of software vendor Novell.
