Surrender in open-source war

Just as the open-source movement appeared to be nearing its first conclusive desktop replacement win in the federal government, the Department of Veterans' Affairs has got cold feet and will extend its existing relationship with Microsoft.

Veterans' Affairs was considered the department most likely to be the first large migration to an open source desktop environment.

The decision has thrown a cloud over federal government efforts to encourage agencies to investigate open source software options as a way to reduce costs.
