- Linux is Not "About to Fork" like Unix, Nov 22, 2004
You may have seen Paul Krill's concern that the Linux kernel may be about to "fork" and go the way of Unix. He attended the SDForum conference recently, which covered the following topics, Open Source in the Enterprise: Practical Considerations, Vendor Perspectives, Success Stories, Open Source Legal Issues, and Investing in Open Source. One of the keynote addresses was by Andrew Morton, maintainer of the Linux 2.6 kernel, and something he said worried Krill. Never fear, Mr. Krill. The kernel is safe, as you will see.
- Is Linux about to fork?, Nov 19, 2004
Linux could be about to fork. In a worrying parallel to the issue that stopped Unix becoming a mass-market product in the 1980s - leaving the field clear for Microsoft - a recent open source conference saw a leading Linux kernel developer predict that there could soon be two versions of the Linux kernel.

- STP upgrade simplifies testing of Linux applications, Aug 24, 2004
The new version of Scalable Test Platform (STP) makes it much easier to test the performance of Linux applications.

In the past, STP was used solely to test the Linux kernel. The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) has made various changes in STP version 3.0 so that it can now be used to test Linux applications.

- OSDL introduces improved Linux kernel development tool, Aug 20, 2004

- Plug 'n Play progress in Linux, Jul 30, 2004
Kernel developer and author Robert Love wants to take all the fun out of Linux. Someday you won't have to specify /dev pathnames to utilities when installing new devices, or configure CUPS and download a driver to make a printer visible, or determine which application can read data from a consumer device (unless you choose to do it the old-fashioned way). Instead, when you plug in something, it will just work, OS X style.
- LinuxWorld preview: Linux 2.6 - What's the holdup?, Jul 27, 2004
So, how do you like the new kernel? You say you're not running it? Well, you should know that you are not in the minority. The vast majority of Linux users are still not running with 2.6. At LinuxWorld in San Francisco next week, you'll see that not every Linux distribution has embraced 2.6, either.

So what's the deal? Why aren't more companies using the latest and greatest? Who is shipping distributions with the new kernel, and who is holding back? What is the reaction of the Linux community to the 2.6 kernel? This article will try to answer some of these questions.

- Ottawa Linux Symposium day 4: Andrew Morton's keynote address, Jul 26, 2004
The Ottawa Linux Symposium wrapped up its busy 4 days with a 6-hour long bar party at the Black Thorn Café across the street from the American Embassy in Ottawa. And for some, it was that social aspect that they came for. For most attendees, though, stable Linux kernel maintainer Andrew Morton's keynote address was the highlight of the day.

- Linux kernel: Moving closer to Windows?, Jul 02, 2004
Security and the way windowing is handled remain two of the diminishing differences between Linux and Windows, according to one of the main speakers at Microsoft's developer conference

At Microsoft's Tech Ed conference in Amsterdam on Wednesday, a session was devoted to how, according to one Microsoft fan at least, the Linux kernel is beginning to resemble, well -- Windows.
