New York Times runs Firefox ad, Dec 16, 2004

Fans of the Mozilla Foundation's Firefox browser who funded an advert in The New York Times will finally get to see their names in print on Thursday.

Sales of new and used PCs running the Linux operating system will reach $10 billion by 2008, market researcher IDC predicted Wednesday.

The companies are well aware of their bifurcated management strategies. Both Sun and Novell have said that they're looking to simplify their rather complicated desktop management portfolios through consolidation of technologies and brands. Until that happens, when you hear either company making a big deal about how easy it is to manage their *nix-based desktops, read the fine print.

Mandrakesoft recently made a move into offering pre-configured Linux-based file and e-mail servers to small and midsize businesses. The products are being offered through Linux consulting and services firm Connect Computing, and are aimed at enticing small business users off of Windows-based servers and onto Linux.

Once the hallmark of a laid-off dot-commer, the job title "consultant" is now legitimately paired with "Linux." Linux consultants, often called in to supplement the in-house staff of large corporations, are also finding fertile ground in the growing number of small businesses seeking powerful and cost-effective IT solutions that let them compete with bigger firms.

Shares of Red Hat and Novell both gained in morning action after Merrill Lynch suggested Sun Microsystems should purchase a Linux company and named the companies as logical candidates.
