International Business Machines presented the Spanish government on Friday with what it called the most powerful computer in Europe, saying it would open a new era in scientific research in Spain.

The computer, called MareNostrum, will help Spanish researchers with a wide range of investigations, the Spanish government said, including studying the human genome, predicting the environmental impact of agricultural and industrial policies, and forecasting the movements of forest fires. It may also be used for research in the automobile and aerospace industries, and for studying climate change, the government said.
