Silicon Graphics has begun work on an open-source version of a development tool for high-performance computing programmers that has been available only as a proprietary product, the company plans to announce on Thursday. The US Energy Department is funding SGI to create the software, called Open/SpeedShop, a relative of the SpeedShop software the company has sold for years.
