The Agriculture Department's Forest Service will be one of the early adopters of Cray Inc.'s new Linux machines.
Officials at Cray Inc., a supercomputer manufacturer, introduced earlier this week the XD1 Linux-based supercomputer. Starting at less than $100,000, the XD1 is a less expensive alternative to the company's traditional supercomputers, and it is designed to outperform Linux clusters built using generic off-the-shelf parts that are increasingly popular with government high-performance computing shops.

In the last week, we've seen Schwartz slag off Red Hat, not to mention Linux in general - which Schwartz persists in spelling linux (lower case) on the grounds that there's more than one. Nit-picking on this linguistic point, it's initially attractive because, if there's only one of something it should attract a capital letter. However Schwartz ignores the obvious precedent of Unix always being capitalised, despite the existence of more than one Unix.

Accountants are stopping small businesses from switching to Open Source solutions, according to OpenAdvantage, a business advice centre.
Speaking at Linuxworld Conference and Expo in London today, Director Scott Thompson said that the lack of a small business version of Sage for Linux is 'one of the biggest hurdles we face'.
