- SCO sort of thinks there are Linux IP violations, but isn't quite sure, Jan 16, 2004
SCOAfter a long explanation of why he handed his homework in late, SCO attorney Ryan Tibbitts explains what this is. Only, he doesn't sound quite sure.

Tibbitts complains that with only an old version of AIX to go on - and only one CD of Dynix/ptx source, SCO can't say for sure.

"It was therefore not possible to directly compare IBM's contributions to Linux with another likely source of those contributions, namely the missing versions of Dynix/ptx."

- Legacy Red Hat Users Seek Alternatives, Jan 16, 2004
Red HatIt's not a surprise, but for some it still hurts.

Users of Red Hat operating systems this week received an "end-of-life" (EOL) e-mail notifying them that support for the popular Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 8 versions has ended.

"We will no longer be producing security, bugfix, or enhancement updates for these products," said the statement delivered to Red Hat Network (RHN) subscribers. RHN is a systems management platform helping administrators patch, update and monitor their infrastructure.

Red Hat Linux 9 will have its RHN support terminated April 30.

But with the entire computing world putting its money behind Linux, it appears that, for SCO, the apocalypse is now.

- Open Source Awards 2004, Jan 16, 2004
Open SourceThe music industry has the Grammies. Hollywood has the Oscars. And now, the open source software community has the Open Source Awards.

Okay, so the name isn't quite as catchy as, say, "Tony" or "Golden Globe," but then, that's the very nature of open source software—people toiling away in this industry are not in it for the glitz and glamour. It's about the challenge. It's like climbing Mt. Everest—you do it because it's there. But, the funny thing is that along the way these teams and individuals actually develop something useful to a greater community of users: the open source community.
