- The Voice of Groklaw, Jan 01, 2004

SCOMore and more members of the Linux community--and sundry others--keep flocking to Groklaw, to get a better grip on the manifold issues surrounding the SCO legal controvery. Who, however, is Pamela Jones, the voice behind Groklaw?

How has she responded to the growth of Groklaw from a blog to a full-fledged Web site? What's the origin of the "Groklaw" name? Why does Jones use Mandrake Linux? As a paralegal, has Jones ever considered becoming an attorney? Does she think SCO will ever prevail? For the answers to these and many other questions, LinuxPlanet conducted an interview with Jones.

- MySQL CEO Mickos Addresses Critics, Looks to Open-Source Growth, Jan 01, 2004
MySQLFew can expect any open source-related news to escape its share of both withering scorn and good insight from venues such as Slashdot. This premise held true when a recent, independent study done by Reasoning Inc. claimed that open source database MySQL was some 6 times cleaner than comparable proprietary code.

With the comments on Slashdot in mind, and with the knowledge that MySQL 5.0 will be announced soon, eWEEK.com Database Editor Lisa Vaas decided to catch up with MySQL AB CEO Marten Mickos to get some feedback on the community commentary and to find out what his company's planning in the new year

- 2004 Won't Be the Year of the Linux Desktop, Jan 01, 2004
GeneralI use a Linux desktop every day. Specifically, I run SuSE Linux Professional 9.0 with KDE 3.1.4. On top of that, I use Mozilla 1.5 for my Web browsing, OpenOffice 1.1 for my word processing and spreadsheets, and Gaim 0.74 for my instant messaging needs. For those times I need a Windows program, usually PhotoShop and Quicken, I use NeTraverse's Win4Lin to run them on a Windows 98SE virtual machine.

For me, it works great. But I know Linux like the back of my hand. So do most people who use Linux desktops today. For most corporate knowledge workers, though, the Linux desktop still isn't good enough.
