- Interview: Marcelo Tosatti, Dec 27, 2003
Marcelo Tosatti became the maintainer of the 2.4 stable kernel when he was 18 years old in November of 2001. His first kernel release was 2.4.16 on November 26'th which very quickly followed the earlier 2.4.15 to address an issue with filesystem corruption. Two years later, he has recently released 2.4.23 and plans to soon put the 2.4 stable kernel into maintenance mode, only addressing bugs and security issues.

Living in Brazil, Marcelo currently works for Cyclades Corporation. In this interview he looks at how he became the 2.4 maintainer, the challenges involved, and brings us up to date with the current status of the 2.4 kernel.

- Linux kernel 2.6 heads for final testing, Nov 28, 2003
Linux creator Linus Torvalds has released a fresh test version of the long-delayed 2.6 operating system kernel, which is expected to be the last test release before the software is finalised.

Kernel version 2.6.0-test11 made its way onto the Web late on Wednesday, before Torvalds said he was clocking off for the US' long Thanksgiving holiday weekend. "Please don't even bother sending me patches, because I'll be stuffing my face away from email over the next few days," Torvalds wrote in an email to the Linux kernel mailing list. "Mmmm. Turkey."

- Linux 2.6 Set for Release, Nov 27, 2003
After a multiyear development effort, the 2.6 version of the Linux kernel is set for release in the second half of December. This is the first major Linux kernel release since 2001, when version 2.4 was launched.

Version of 2.6 will usher in a number of important improvements over its predecessor, according to Andrew Morton, who -- along with Linus Torvalds -- maintains the Linux kernel.

Chief among these is the ability to run servers with a greater number of processors. "For high-end and server applications, probably the most significant [upgrade] is in scalability," Morton told NewsFactor. "2.6 scales to more CPUs, more memory, more disks and larger disks."

- OSDL Launches Linux Kernel Awareness Initiative, Nov 27, 2003
The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), a global consortium of leading technology companies dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux, today announced a new initiative to raise awareness about how the Linux kernel is developed.

With the highly-anticipated release of the final Linux 2.6 production kernel due shortly, OSDL is taking a series of steps to increase customer confidence in using Linux. The new Linux kernel will be used by tens of millions of people in new ways, not only on servers and in telecommunications networks, but also on desktops and in consumer electronic devices. Among the Lab's first steps in this new initiative is the creation of a simplified graphical model that illustrates how software code is contributed to the Linux kernel.

- Linux Kernel Back-Door Hack Attempt Discovered, Nov 06, 2003
"The BitKeeper to CVS gateway was apparently hacked in an attempt to add a root exploit back door to the Linux kernel, according to the linux-kernel archive. The change was in the file kernel/exit.c and changed the user ID of a process to root under the guise of checking the validity of some flags. The core Linux BitKeeper kernel repository was not at risk, and in fact it was the BitKeeper CVS export scripts that detected the unauthorized modifications to CVS. The changes were falsely attributed in CVS to long-time Linux developer davem (David Miller). Users of the BKCVS repository should resync their trees to remove the offending code if they had replicated it since yesterday."

- Linux 2.6 creeps forward, Oct 28, 2003
Version 2.6 of the Linux kernel crept a little closer to reality as the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) on Monday made available a test version of the technology aimed primarily at enterprise developers.

The OSDL is calling on all major Linux users, developers, and systems providers to focus on the new release, called Test9, to "test, validate, and enhance" it in preparation for the finished version of the technology, which is due either late this year or early next. The new version is now available for download at http://www.kernel.org or ftp.kernel.org.

- New kernel set to speed Linux adoption, Oct 10, 2003
The operating system is still seen as a leading-edge technology for high-end database servers, commercial clusters, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management and supply chain management, Jollans conceded.
