AlwaysOn: In Silicon Valley there’s some debate regarding Moore’s Law and the limits of silicon.
Adkins: Yeah, I’ve heard this. But at IBM, we continue to make major innovations around silicon processes. So we’ve had things like SOI (silicon-on-insulator), we’ve had our silicon germanium-based capabilities to address low-resource, low-power environments. And we continue to make major investments and advancements around silicon-based processes.
So is Moore’s Law running out of gas? I think that there’s still a significant amount of innovation left in terms of meeting the spirit of Moore’s Law, and I would submit to you that there is always a breakthrough on the horizon. Remember when the industry didn’t know how to deal with copper as part of the silicon process? Then we introduced that, and kept Moore’s Law alive and well. And in my view there will continue to be some type of innovation and breakthrough.
